ABLE Act Column

ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts for certain individuals with disabilities and their families. 
News, Research, Data & Resources:

  • 529 Insiders, “List of Open ABLE Programs.” Editor’s Take: The status board was updated to reflect the launch of Maine, Hawaii and more. The page also reports the four states that do not offer an ABLE Program. As of July 13, 2022, 49 ABLE programs are offered by 46 states and Washington, DC. Note that Oregon and Virginia both offer 2 programs, and hence 46 states offering 48 programs plus Washington, DC. Thank you for the reader question, and happy to answer with an updated status board.   • ABLE Age Adjustment Act Status Board: The bill would increase the age of onset for eligibility to open an ABLE account from 26 years old to 46 years old. As of July 14, 2022, the bill sponsorship was as follows:
    • Senate (S331): 1 sponsor and 20 cosponsors
      • On July 13, 2022, Christopher Coons [DE] signed as the 20th cosponsor
    • Congress Sponsorship (HR1219): 1 sponsor and 87 cosponsors
  • ABLE Afternoon Summit Updates:
    • ABLE Afternoon Summit will be held on October 19, 2022 of the 529 Conference 2022 in Orlando
