• Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, “Has the growth in the price of education outpaced overall inflation?” Editor’s Take: ISS MI will be tracking tuition inflation post-pandemic. The back-to-normal phase of the post-pandemic era also means a return to historical tuition inflation rates. Furthermore, recent changes in federal income tax deductions for tuition payments and rising interest rates (and therefore new student loan interest rates) means that the importance of education financial planning continues to increase. Have the education financial planning conversation today.
• College Board, “Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid 2023.” Editor’s Take: This report includes a number of sources for tuition by school type and trends in historical pricing and financial aid. For example, the price for private nonprofit four-year schools increased 4.0% over the past year. Click the link and bookmark for future reference.
• Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, “Economic well-being of U.S. Households (SHED).” Editor’s Take: This report provides demographic information and market sizing of student loans. Additionally, there are comparisons between student loans, and other types of debt. The information is useful from a base knowledge, as well as presenting story boards on education financial planning. Click and bookmark for future reference.
• 529 Insiders, “Status Board: State Income Tax Treatment on 529 Distributions to Roth IRAs.” Editor’s Take: Effective 2024, certain types of qualified transfers from 529s to Roth IRAs will be allowed from a federal income tax perspective. From a state income tax perspective, this article categorizes the transfer as a qualified expense, non-qualified expense or decision pending from a state income tax recapture perspective for those that file state income tax with those states. This status board is for information purposes only based on publicly available information as of publication date, and you and your clients are responsible for determining the eligibility of a 529 distribution to a Roth IRA rollover.
